My lastest photo of the Park View KGL, taken in January, 2007. Last summer, I
actually bought some real bookends, in this case, two polished brass Fleur de Lis.
I've been upgrading the KGL. Replay and Into the Deep are both
signed by Ken Grimwood. Also, notice the four paperbacks, Replay,
Into the Deep, Breakthrough, and my latest addition, and one I had
no idea existed until recently, Two Plus Two. I visited Lascuax II near
Montignac, France and bought an art kit with a slab of yellow limestone, some
powdered paints (just like what the cave men used), and one side with a black outline
of a bovine and a horse (1st picture). The owner of the Weaverville KGL, a pretty
darn good artist, painted the outline side then free-handed the other side (2nd picture
with the 3 horses) from a post card, using only the powdered paints, water and that
little paintbrush that came with the kit. I was quite impressed.
Finally, the Park View KGL is complete. I received a London published copy of
Breakthrough today (March 6, 2006), an early birthday present from the
owner of the Weaverville, CA library. The bookends are from the region of France
called Auvergne. This artwork is called mold encrustation. An artist creates a
mold, then copies of the molds are put on 28 meter high ladder-like constructions
inside caves and water from mineral springs is cascaded over them. They end up
with these calcite works of art. The two pieces depict a french grape harvest
from centuries ago. {Note: These calcite pieces have now been framed and are
hanging on my dining room wall.}
An updated photo of my KGL, this time with The Voice Outside in hardcover, Breakthrough in paperback and a paperback of Into the Deep. Oh, I almost forgot...and featuring my "Sharla" bookends. When I ordered the Sharlas from ebay, the person said they were 8 inches tall. Nope, they are 12 inches tall. Now, I have two amazon Sharlas. Sharla is a lust interest of Jeff Winston in Replay.
This is my collection of Ken's books (in Park View, Iowa). I'm missing
Breakthrough (I do have the paperback) and The Voice Outside
(I've ordered a copy), however, notice that I have a copy of Two Plus Two,
written by Ken under the pseudonym Alan Cochran.
You see 5 paperback copies of Replay. These are copies 21 through 25 that I have purchased (at Amazon.com) over the last few years. I either leave copies here and there (one paperback of Replay is in Bars, France) or I give them to friends and encourage them to be passed on to other potential Replay fans. And, yes, I know I need professional help. The bookends. If one doesn't have a nice set of bookends to display Ken's books, I can think of nothing better than a 1998 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac Bordeaux on one end and a 2000 Chateau Soutard St. Emilion Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux on the other end. {Note: My wife and I, and Jim and Marilyn from Wisconsin, drank the bottle of Mouton Rothschild in June of 2006. Absolutely the best wine that I've ever drunk. Superb!}
